Maya fashion in the highlands of Chiapas

The changes and tradition of the living mayas.
The Chip Morris Collection at Na Bolom

Thirty years ago, with the financial support of anthropologist Francesco Pellizzi, I began collecting and studying costumes from every Maya community in Chiapas. Five years ago I decided  to make another definitive collection of contemporary textiles from every community included in the Pellizzi Collection. This new collection, when compared to the first, provides a clear physical document of cultural change. Usually cultural change implies tragic loss. In this case, current weavings demonstrate an increasing complexity of cultural expression.
